Once upon a time in Rio

This romance written by an ex-diplomat and Brazilian writer, Francisco Azevedo, tells the saga of a Portuguese family that migrated to Rio at the beginning of the 20th century.

There is a phantastic element that perpetrates the story and adds flavor to it: the rice thrown at the wedding of the patriarchs, captured by aunt Palma, and offered as a gift to the newlyweds. It became a symbol of happiness to the family but also an element of jealousy and disagreements.

The original title in Portuguese is not “Once upon a time in Rio” but rather “Aunt Palma’s rice”, as she is the one who passes the family’s stories to the following generations. It was translated into different languages. Available in English here!

An interesting and easy read that leaves a taste of “saudade” at the end.
